Courses in the College, Career & Life Skills category are designed to help students prepare for life beyond high school—whether that means college, a career, or independent living. These courses focus on essential life skills, goal setting, financial literacy, and career exploration to support confident and capable decision-making.

 

Students learn how to plan for their futures, manage personal finances, communicate effectively, and develop the habits and mindsets that lead to long-term success. Whether exploring career pathways, preparing for college applications, or learning how to navigate adult responsibilities, these courses provide valuable knowledge and practical tools for life.

ACT Test Prep

Essential Elective

This course provides students with a comprehensive overview of the most effective strategies and most relevant content for raising their ACT scores. Students begin with a full-length practice test to identify personalized areas to target. From there, they can engage with English, math, reading, and science tutorials, each accompanied by a quiz to test student mastery. Students also learn important information about the structure and content of the ACT along the way.

Applied Leadership

Students engage in activities that develop and apply leadership skills through hands-on experiences. Students complete a minimum of 90 hours participating in activities such as student government, community service, charitable work, advocacy for a cause, or leading a group to solve a specific problem. Through these experiences, students build and demonstrate competencies in communication, technology, organizational skills, personal responsibility, and integrity.

Career Planning

Students evaluate their interests, skills, and preferences; this can include personality type, innate talents, training, values, hobbies, and topics of interest. They research and compare a variety of career options, and analyze for each the job description, salary expectations, job outlook, and the training and skills required. They build a career portfolio of a resume, references, sample letters that can be adjusted for future use, and other items that one might want to showcase.

Keyboarding

Essential Elective

Students learn touch-typing skills with proper finger placement, building both accuracy and speed. Students should be able to type all letters and numbers with 80% or better accuracy at 24 wpm by the end of Keyboarding A. Students should achieve 35 wpm at 90% or better accuracy by the end of Keyboarding B, and this includes typing with punctuation marks and capital letters.

Life Skills

What do you want out of life? How do you achieve your dreams for the future? These can be difficult questions to answer, but they don’t have to be with the right tools. Learn more about yourself and prepare for the future through goal setting, decision making, surviving college and career, and how to become a valuable contributing member of society. It’s your life; make it count!

Personal Finance

This course leads students through the basic concepts and practices associated with day to day financial living. Students learn sound financial practices for making, saving, and spending money. Students will become familiar with record keeping, banking and investing, and planning for their financial future. Completion of this course provides a solid foundation in basic handling of finances and an understanding of building and implementing a personal budget.

SAT Test Prep

This comprehensive course will help students prepare for and raise their scores on the Digital SAT, building their math, reading, and writing skills and performance. Students begin with a full-length practice test to identify personalized areas to target. From there, they can engage with reading, writing, and math tutorials, each accompanied by a quiz to test mastery.

Senior Seminar

This course is instructed by the school counselor and is meant to help seniors prepare for graduation and post high school endeavors. Students explore college options, learn how to apply to college, set future goals, and explore careers and financial literacy. Students will also learn about registering to vote, gap year options, and managing stress, anxiety, and depression.
